Effects of flood in our society

Viet Nam is a country with abundant natural resources, annually Red River and Me Kong River bring the enormous alluvial deposits for our country to develop agriculture. However, they also cause many natural phenomenon especially floods. When the rivers are in flood stage, people must suffer from destruction even loss their lives. Indeed, floods cause many negative effects in our society. In my point of view, there are three main effects of flood: physical damage, casualties, and economic decrease.

The first consequence of floods is physical damage. The power of water flow can swallow anything on their trip. They can destroy any type of structure including bridges, dikes, houses, buildings, sewer systems, fields, etc. Besides, floods often go with storms. It is hard for anything to exist in such bad conditions. In fact, in 1999, residents in central Viet Nam suffered from a terrible flood. As a result, their furniture and property were carried away by the water; their houses and gardens were swamped into the river. Thousands of people had seen their homes and rice fields destroyed.

Secondly, floods also cause many casualties. First, people and live stock die due to drowning. Some lucky people can live on their roof or cling certain logs to drift along the water and hope emergency aid. Besides , people must face to shortages of foods; so, dying of hungry is also one of effects of flood. In addition, floods lead to dangerous diseases. Because water supplies are contaminated, clean drinking water become scare. In unhygienic water and foods conditions, water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrheal, etc will able to spread rapidly. As a result, if people do not know how to protect themselves from those diseases, their lives will stay threatened on flooding days.

Finally, floods make our country's economy decreasing. When floods happen, officials will be responsible for evacuating the victims, organizing aids and delivering foods. It takes a lot of time and money on struggling against floods. As a result of floods, government spend a large of money on rebuilding infrastructures. Besides, in agriculture, lack of food crops can be caused due to loss of entire harvest. For example, flooding in Me Kong Delta will make rice-growing reduced dramatically. It affects on benefits both farmers and national economy.

In conclusion, flooding causes three main consequences including physical damage, casualties and economic decrease. we should recognize its effects to protect ourselves and government should process effective solutions to reduce floods.
